Owners John and Barbara McFarland opened Woodsholm Gallery in a small hallway of their home in 1970. Over the years, they have created their individual work spaces as two additions to the house. Visitors are invited to wander through the lush, woodland gardens between the spaces.

Barbara’s art reflects her lifelong attachment to all aspects of the north country, and is interpreted with mixed media painting. Stories emerge through subject matter, usually as part of a series, such as “Lies Hidden,” a collection of indigenous cultures and the relics of their lives.

John’s art is largely motivated by his own desire to capture images which have special significance for him, images which evoke a deep spiritual or personal connection with the subject. This is particularly true for his portraits, as he seeks out faces which show the character and life experiences of the individuals behind them. John’s aviation art is driven by a lifelong love of aircraft. His background in metal sculpture informs his appreciation of the sculptural qualities inherent in airplane design. Because he has always loved to draw, John feels his art has benefited from pursuing that discipline since drawing develops one’s composition skills and eye/hand coordination.

Finally, John has been extraordinarily fortunate to have been able to work with and learn from many gifted artists and is deeply indebted to all of them.  A special note here to address the importance which his wife, Barbara, has had, as the constant interplay of creative ideas between them is one of the most stimulating and exciting aspects of the life they share.
