2025 marks a major milestone—the 25th anniversary of the North Woods Art Tour! What started as a simple idea has grown into a beloved tradition, bringing art lovers and artists together in the heart of Wisconsin’s Northwoods.

How It All Began
Back in 2000, Carl G. Gromoll, a wood designer and craftsman from Eagle River, had a vision. He knew that many talented artists were creating incredible work in their home studios, tucked away in the woods, without the visibility of galleries. His idea? A self-guided tour where visitors could step inside these private spaces, meet the artists, watch them work, and experience both the art and the beauty of the Northwoods.
The First Tour

Pulling this off wasn’t easy—especially in the days before widespread internet access! Carl managed to connect with artists across three counties, organizing the first-ever tour in July 2000. Artist Sara Muender, with her background in graphic design, created the very first North Woods Art Tour brochure. Meanwhile, Carl crafted the tour’s original roadside signs out of particle board and black paint—quite a contrast to the ones we use today!
That first year, 19 studios and artist-owned galleries opened their doors to an eager crowd. Visitors were delighted to discover these hidden gems, watch live demonstrations, and see art come to life in the most scenic corners of northern Wisconsin.
Growing Into a Year-Round Tradition
For many years, the North Woods Art Tour was a summer event, welcoming visitors during the height of the season. But as the tour gained popularity, organizers saw an opportunity to offer something special in the fall as well. With Wisconsin’s stunning autumn colors providing a breathtaking backdrop, the fall tour was introduced, turning the event into a perfect weekend getaway for art and nature lovers alike.
A Tradition That Endures
Though much has changed over 25 years, the heart of the North Woods Art Tour remains the same. It’s still about discovery, connection, and the joy of experiencing art where it’s made. As we celebrate this special anniversary, we invite you to join us in honoring the artists, the history, and the creative spirit that make this tour so unique.
